Paintings by Chris Williams and ceramics by Alfie Hall.
I make paintings and drawings of landscapes in Herefordshire, Shropshire and beyond. Observing and experiencing the landscape in different seasons, weathers and light is the starting point of all my work. Some paintings began life as plein air works which were then completed in the studio, while others were developed using sketchbook drawings, memory and photographs.
Most of the work here is either from, or is inspired by, a recent residency in Corris, North Wales. It was wonderful and very important to me to be able to immerse myself in the surrounding countryside.
My working method can be a very long and involved process. Trebossing and impressing with anything that will give a pattern, the marks are filled with coloured slips, then more marks made followed by more slips.
After firing, these layers are rubbed back to reveal the image/pattern beneath. Most of the forms are press moulded.
I sometimes use resist ink and acrylic paint, but rarely glaze, instead using a marble polish, as I find that glazing destroys the visual and tactile quality of the piece.
My work is a continual source of exploration and experiment with form, texture and colour and has evolved over 40 years since completing my studies at Hereford College of Arts.
